Tower | Wall | Desert

This studio broke its time down into three smaller projects that were all inspired by watching one original German movie titled, Wings of Desire (1987). The three projects were, Tower | Wall | and Desert. All practically without location, they were exercises in making space through different methods and for different purposes. Tower mainly dealt with carving or erasing to generate space, Wall dealt with shifting or moving to generate space, and Desert dealt with occupying or adding to make space.

Tower - Tower drew inspiration from the circus and only color scenes from the movie. The task was to generate space for performers and spectators to interact, live, and work within. All constructed vertically a series of collages were made to show a large section drawing.

Wall - Wall was solely a physical project, where we continually manipulated a single large model. In this, we cut away and added layers of space, editing what we deemed to be an existing large wall (drawn from the Berlin wall in the movie) and creating space around, and within it. I chose to create multiple winding paths to have the occupants constantly experiences as much surface of the wall as possible, attaining many new views.

Desert - Desert was the most developed project, in we were to create a desert community with a series of structures and interventions connecting them. I chose to create a program for the community as a star gazing society as the desert is famously apt for such activities. For this, I pick an arbitrary real site location, so I could determine what real stars and constellations would be seen from that place throughout the year.  Then I used those mappings to overlay with the ground textures to generate the dwellings and pathways alike. This can be seen in the series of additive collages. Finally models were made with lights and hand drawn plans and sections were crafted for presentation.
